I saw a commercial on TV the other day, and it was of a woman holding a hair dryer.
The hair dryer was hollow in the middle.
It reminded me of a Dyson fan.
And I immediately thought “Dyson should expand into hair dryers!”
It made perfect sense.
And then I saw what the advertisement was for: “The Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer”.
The fact that it came to my mind like that, shows that this is a brilliant brand extension for Dyson.
Vacuum cleaners suck and hair dryers blow, but it still makes sense.
Contrast this to this fictional commercial:
A busy executive comes home puts down his briefcase, walks straight into the kitchen and takes a frozen meal out of the freezer.
He heats it up and starts to eat.
What brand did it make you think of?
Yes, Colgate branched into frozen dinners. And yes, the product failed.
